Deck Your Halls

It’s time to deck the halls and give your home some holiday spirit! While it’s easy to throw some things up, if you’ve put work into making your home look beautiful from January to November, why not make it look truly spectacular in December? With our tips below and our signature collection of decorations available at the Grand Showroom and our Experience Centres, decorating your home for the holidays is simple and fun!

  • Pick a general colour scheme and style, and stick with it. Red and green may be the colours of the season, but there are also golds and silvers and even ice blues. When picking out your decorations, it’s better to choose one primary colour and look for ways to incorporate that in your existing décor. Similarly, if your home is all clean cut modern lines, you probably don’t want rustic-chic decorations. Choose a general style that your decorations will follow, and use that style as a unifying element between your rooms.
  • Holiday decorations don’t have to be about big pieces (except, of course, the tree!), they can be small, simple touches added onto your existing furniture. Wreathes and garland are a perfect way to spice up your home, and can add a little flair to bookcases, cabinets and your lighting – garland hung from a chandelier is one of our favourite ways to make a room more festive.
  • On a related note, ornaments don’t have to be strictly assigned to your tree. Hang them from garland throughout your house, and use them in centrepieces to spice up your dining table and coffee table. A beautiful tray or dessert stand overflowing with simple glass ornaments looks elegant and is so easy to put together.
  • Regardless of the style you choose for your home in general, if you’re hosting over the holiday season plan your dining room décor to be a touch more formal than the rest of the home. This is a special time of year, and bringing people together for a meal is a special occasion. Put some time into creating beautiful, festive centrepieces – a wreath laid flat with candles in the middle is a simple and chic option – and pay attention to your table settings. Incorporating seasonal colours is an easy and effective way to serve up the holiday spirit.
  • If you’re looking to make your home décor elegant at this time of year, you can’t go wrong with metallics. Beautiful silver and gold pieces add a touch of luxury and are easy to coordinate throughout your home. Pair with select colours for a simple but sophisticated ambiance; metallic on white is a beautiful combination that will make any room feel luxurious.
  • Natural touches are important in any space throughout the year, but even more so around the holidays – we bring entire trees into our homes, after all! We suggest investing in high quality, but artificial, pieces. Your tree, garlands and flowers will give you the same atmosphere as real ones, but can be used again and again. Also, it’s easier to get your decorations up if you don’t have to find them fresh every year.
  • Christmas decorations aren’t always visual. Festive soaps, lotions and candles will make the scents of the holiday come alive. Homemade pomanders with Swahili Coast cloves can add a festive touch and liven up centrepieces. And – of course – nothing says Christmas like the smell of Christmas cookies baking. • Regardless of your style, don’t feel that you can’t incorporate more playful elements. Parents know that this time of year comes with lovely crafts handmade by little ones, and Christmas cards come in so many colours, styles and sizes. To incorporate all the personal touches that make this time of year special, have designated areas, like a Christmas card rack or a special tree, that let you show off the love and companionship of the season.

No matter your home and Christmas style, Palacina Interiors boasts a curated collection that makes it easy to select decorations that will look great in your home. We’ve done the initial work in choosing a variety of pieces that can work well together, and you simply need to pick your favourites. Visit us this month for a Palacina Christmas Experience, including music and cookies at our Grand Showroom on Kitale Lane. Happy Holidays!

Our Favourite Vanilla Cookie Recipe

  • 16 tbs (250g) Unsalted butter
  • 1 cup (250g) sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 ½ cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • Colored sugars or icings for decoration

  • At the outset, all ingredients should be at room temperature
  • Preheat the oven to 190C
  • Beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, pausing occasionally to scrape down the sides of the bowl. If using an electric mixer, use the flat beater attachment.
  • Add eggs, vanilla and salt and continue to beat until all ingredients are well mixed.
  • Add flour and continue beating until just incorporated, again pausing to scrape down the sides of the bowl as necessary.
  • Roll the dough out into 1/2 cm rectangle, and use cookie cutters to cut out festive shapes. Place cookies on a non-stick cookie tray, approximately 2.5 cm apart.
  • Bake cookies for 14 minutes, or until lightly golden. Transfer to wire racks and allow to cool completely.
  • Decorate cookies as desired. For a simple but elegant finish, dust with powdered sugar.

Yield: approximately 3 dozen
